Under some circumstances or with skins that are very sensitive to the sun, UVA rays can generate pigmentary alterations that go beyond redness and sunburn. In these cases, some melanocytes produce more melanin that settles hetereogenerously in some areas. Pigmentary alterations normally accumulate on the forehead, cheeks and upper lip. They appear thanks to the UVA radiation and have two main causes:

Melasma. It is caused by hormonal changes, such as pregnancy, or the use of photosensitive medications, such as oral contraceptives.
